How to bring a plus-one to a wedding when you're single: five options, compared

You've got the invitation, it says "and guest," and you're single. Five ways to fill the seat, with the honest trade-offs.

1. A friend

The default, and often the best. Free, known quantity, already likes you. The risks: they cancel the week before, or they treat it as their night out rather than yours. Works best when the friend is someone who's good in a room of strangers.

2. A coworker

Reliable, presentable, and usually happy for a free dinner. The catch is that they're now in your family's photos and your family's memory, and Monday morning still happens.

3. A dating-app match

Sometimes it goes wonderfully. More often it's a lot to ask of someone you've met twice: a full day, your whole family, and a speech about lasting love. If you're also hoping something comes of it, the wedding is the highest-pressure venue you could pick.

4. Going alone

Underrated. You'll be seated with people the couple chose for you, you'll probably know some of them, and the day is shorter than you fear. If you're comfortable in crowds this is the simplest answer. If you're not, it's the one people regret most.

5. Booking a professional plus-one

The one most people don't know is an option. On PlusOne Pro you book a Pro by the hour to attend with you. You choose someone whose profile fits the event, message them in the app beforehand, and they show up dressed for it and ready to be good company. It's explicitly not a date — not romantic, not adult — and every Pro has had a government ID approved before they can be booked. The Pro sets their rate; there's a 15% platform fee on top; your card is only charged when the Pro accepts; and the Pro is paid 24 hours after the booking ends.

The cost is real money, which the other four options aren't. What you get for it is someone whose job is your day going well, no morning-after, and no favor to repay.
